2011 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR - No. 7Teeth by The Devil Whale (May 24th, 2011)
I had never even heard of The Devil Whale until a short while ago and here they are sitting in my top 10. That, in a sentence, is everything great about music discovery today. Hailing from Salt Lake City Utah these kids came out of nowhere and floored me with an amazing album from start to finish. Full credit to Jess from exfm for pointing them out. I heard the track Barracudas in my stream from her and immediately went on a mad dash to find more of The Devil Whale. The “more” proved a worthy effort. After each new track I heard the more I loved this band. The entire album is up on bandcamp here. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
The Devil Whale have this SoCal vibe going on, though a bit heavier than normal and certainly a bit more poppy. Solid tunes, wonderful lyrics, great arrangements, terrific musicianship all adds up to one helluva sophomore record. Here’s to more great music from The Devil Whale coming soon and definitely getting out to see them when they come to NYC.Standout track and contender for track of the year: So-Called War (via exfm)
